We Should Overturn Citizens United

Here’s the story of Citizens United….

Story of Citizens United v FEC

The Story of Citizens United v. FEC explores the inordinate power that corporations exercise in our democracy. The movie explores the history of the American corporation and corporate political spending, the appropriate roles of citizens and for-profit corporations in a democracy and the toxic impact the Citizens United Supreme Court decision is having on our political process. It ends with a call to amend the U.S. Constitution to confirm that people—not corporations—make the decisions in a democracy.

From Moyers & Company

12 Ways ‘Citizens United’ Changed Politics

Five years ago this week (Jan. 2010), in a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court ruled corporations and unions could spend unlimited amounts of money to advocate for or against political candidates.

The court declared that spending by labor unions and companies — including certain types of nonprofit corporations — did “not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption” so long as it was not done in concert or coordination with a political candidate’s own campaign.

While it is still illegal for corporations and labor unions to give money directly to candidates for federal office, that ruling, known as Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, has dramatically reshaped the political landscape for federal and state elections.

Among the most significant developments: A surge of political “dark money” — secret cash that opaque nonprofit organizations funnel into US elections. Such groups do not publicly disclose their donors. (more)

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says: I would overturn supreme court’s Citizens United ruling

If Ruth Bader Ginsburg could overturn any of the decisions made by America’s highest court in the past 10 years, it would be the sweeping 2010 decision that expanded corporate personhood.

While answering questions at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, the supreme court justice said that if she had to pick one case to undo, it would be the Citizens United decision. “I think our system is being polluted by money,” Ginsburg said.

Ginsburg said she is optimistic that “sensible restrictions” on campaign financing will one day be in place, quoting her late husband Martin Ginsburg to explain why: “The true symbol of the United States is not the eagle, it’s the pendulum – when it swings too far in one direction, it will swing back.” (more)

It’s time to contact your Reps and Senators and tell them you want Citizens United Overturned so the Rich and Corporations can’t BUY our Government.

Morning Plum: Chaos in Congress is about to get a lot crazier http://wapo.st/1EaH02C

    [snip]

The quote of the week, one that will likely reverberate through the halls of Congress for many months to come, is this one from GOP Rep. Charlie Dent, lamenting the inability of the House GOP caucus to unite behind, well, anything at all:

“We really don’t have 218 votes to determine a bathroom break over here on our side. So how are we going to get 218 votes on transportation, or trade, or whatever the issue?”

While the need to expel human waste should not be trivialized, it turns out that in very short order, Congress will have to determine the outcome of a number of pressing matters that are perhaps far more important than the timing of bathroom breaks.

The Hill reports this morning that another “tense standoff,” one similar to the chaos that erupted around Department of Homeland Security funding, is likely to unfold around the need to replenish the Highway Trust Fund, which is set to run low on funding this spring. Business groups — and the Obama administration — are warning of disaster if funding for ongoing infrastructure projects evaporates, while conservative groups are insisting Republicans agree to devolve infrastructure back to the states. Yet John Boehner is already on record saying he wants to replenish infrastructure funding. He just hasn’t said how it should be paid for. Sound familiar? [more]

Watch: 7-Year-Old Makes Scott Walker Crash and Burn With 2 Questions http://www.occupydemocrats.com/watch-7-year-old-makes-scott-walker-crash-and-burn-with-2-questions/

His first question made him look dumb. The second one made him look even worse.

When second grader Aaron Stark went up to ask Republican Wisconsin a question in this newly released video, the Governor had no idea that he was about to be made to look like an absolute fool by the young, but very astute young man:

“If you were president, what would you do about climate change?”, the young man asked the Republican governor.

Trying to keep his composure, Scott Walker evaded the simple question, giving the boy an unintelligible answer about being a Boy Scout and keeping campsites clean, but the brave young man pressed on:

“Do you even care about climate change?”

At this point, the governor continued to crash and burn, giving a second unintelligible answer about securing natural resources for everyone, completely evading the boy’s question and exposing himself as the intellectual lightweight and political fraud that he is.

It’s truly sad that one a young Wisconsinite try to ask his governor about saving his future and that of other young kids, the governor couldn’t even answer his question.

Kudos to the brave 7-year-old for exposing his fossil fuel-obsessed governor.
