A Few Words on Bernie, and the Democrats, and Figuring This Thing Out
Healthcare is more important than intra-party fighting.

    SEP 13, 2017

It is altogether remarkable that Bernie Sanders on Wednesday morning introduced a “Medicare For All” healthcare reform plan, and that he did so with the public support of a brigade of prominent Democratic senators from Joe Manchin of West Virginia to Kamala Harris of California, as well as with the public support of every Democratic politician with even an outside chance of running for president in 2020. (Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire signed aboard this week.)

It is altogether to the credit of his presidential campaign that this idea has become the unified mainstream goal of the Democratic Party as quickly as it has…

White House Rejects Supremacist Label: “No One Has Done More Than Trump to Prove White People Are Not Superior”

    By Andy Borowitz
    6:33 P.M.

    WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—

Upbraiding the ESPN anchor Jemele Hill for calling Donald Trump a “white supremacist,” the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said on Wednesday that “no one has done more than President Trump to prove that white people are not superior.”

“It’s grossly unfair that Ms. Hill sought to portray Donald Trump as an upholder of white supremacy, when everything he says or does directly undermines that whole concept,” Sanders said. “Anyone who thinks that Donald Trump is on some mission to make white people look good hasn’t been paying attention.”

Sanders urged the ESPN anchor to “do her homework” on Trump before making baseless allegations. “Read his tweets,” she said. “Listen to his speeches. If you still think Donald Trump is trying to prove that white people are superior, I tip my hat to you.”

Ending on a personal note, Sanders said that she was “a hundred-per-cent sure” that her boss is not a white supremacist. “Donald Trump cannot even spell the word ‘supremacist,’ ” she said.

Missouri’s Access to Abortion Is About to Expand Dramatically
Posted By Danny Wicentowski on Tue, Sep 12, 2017 at 6:51 am

The number of abortion-providing clinics in Missouri is about to triple — from one to three. This month, for the first time in several years, the Planned Parenthood locations in Kansas City and Columbia will include abortion among their services, although only the Columbia clinic will offer the surgical procedure.

And that’s only the beginning. Clinics in Joplin and Springfield are still awaiting state inspections, says Jesse Lawder, a spokesman for Planned Parenthood of St. Louis and Southwestern Missouri. Those locations are expected to become the state’s fourth and and fifth abortion providers…

…As abortion rights activists predicted, the courts tend to take a dim view of laws that effectively dismantle access to abortion services. Last year, in a landmark ruling, a federal judge blocked a Texas law mandating that abortion doctors have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and that clinics be outfitted to the standard of an ambulatory surgical center.

Similar laws were also in place in Missouri, and so Sachs blocked those restrictions. In May, he slapped aside the state’s arguments defending laws that judge described as “burdens that have closed or prevented development of clinics.”

Those burdens, Sachs wrote, deny Missouri women the abortion rights guaranteed by the constitution. With the new abortion services coming online soon, those rights are on the brink of being restored.

    Bernie Would’ve Won… y’all

Last night the western portion of Norman, the conservative-leaning House District 46– where Republicans hold a 3,000 voter-registration advantage over Democrats– had a special election to fill the seat of state Rep. Scott Martin (R), who had resigned May 31 to become head of the Norman Chamber of Commerce. No one imagined that the seat– which has been in Republican hands since 1995– would flip to blue. In fact, the Democratic candidate, public school teacher and dedicated Berniecrat, Jacob Rosecrants had run against Martin in 2016 and lost badly– 10,988 (60.41%) to 7,201 (39.59%). Last night, the results were stunning as the 3rd Oklahoma legislative seat since Trump occupied the White House fell to the Democrats.

In a district that went to the Republicans by 21 points last year, Rosecrants beat Republican Darin Chambers 3,176 (60.4%) to 2,081 (39.6%). And Trump won District 46 by 11 points last year.

  5. @cent: He was in his late 40s back then.

Sounds the same which goes to show you not much has changed and the changes have been for the worse. Maybe people are waking up now? (re your other post about OK election)

Computer is fixed now. Took awhile to do it.

Abortion Access in Missouri Is Getting Easier, Thanks to Planned Parenthood and Satanists

…Missouri’s recent stroke of good fortune in the reproductive rights realm may have to do with intervention from the fiery underworld. On Monday, the Satanic Temple argued in a Missouri court that the state’s abortion restrictions violate worshippers’ rights to free religious practice. The organization is challenging two Missouri laws: one that requires patients to look at unscientific anti-abortion propaganda and another that forces them to wait 72 hours between their initial consultations and a second appointments for their abortions. Satanic Temple members argue that their religion prizes rational, independent thought and that forcing Satanists to read anti-abortion pamphlets and “consider a religious proposition with which they do not agree” during the 72-hour waiting period constitutes a violation of their beliefs.

The Satanic challenge to the laws began in 2015, when a pregnant Satanist from rural Missouri identified as “Mary” tried to use a religious waiver to exempt herself from the state’s many requirements designed to prevent women from going forward with abortions. Mary said she had the $800 she needed to get the abortion, but to get to the clinic in St. Louis for two separate appointments, she needed to save up for gas money, a hotel, and child care. As a Satanist, Mary said, she believes her body is “inviolable”—thus, a mandatory waiting period with no medical justification that hampers her bodily autonomy inflicts a “substantial burden” on her “sincerely held religious beliefs,” as does the law that requires she be informed that “abortion will terminate the life of a separate, unique, living human being.” The temple filed both state and federal lawsuits challenging the restrictions; a judge tossed out the federal case in 2016 because Mary was no longer pregnant…

Question: When the bible bangers began to use religious freedom as a political tool, who could have predicted that it would come back to bite them in their asses?

Answer: Pretty much everyone, including a few of the bible bangers.

  8. Urgent! Call today! United States Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121 Tell your representatives to vote NO on the Graham-Cassidy “health care” bill. The GOP only needs to flip one vote and the ACA is done for. Don’t use resistbot as some reps disabled ability to receive from it. Call and write! You can also look up your reps contact info on Civican dot US.

  9. Two things. First, I viewed the first chapter of The Vietnam War from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. I am compelled to see all of it.
Second, unless hurricane Maria drastically changes course and intensity, the U.S. Virgin Island St. Croix is screwed. Maria is headed just to the south of the island (bad news) or directly over the top of the island (also bad news). Maria is also on a heading for Puerto Rico.

Why does this matter? It matters for many reasons but I am mentioning it for one reason in particular. St. Croix and Puerto Rico were relatively unharmed by hurricane Irma. St. Croix is the marshaling and jumping-off point for aid to the U.S. Virgin Islands St. Thomas and St. John as well as to the British Virgin Islands, all of which were crushed by hurricane Irma.

Puerto Rico is over twice as far away from the Irma-stricken islands than St. Croix is (90+ miles versus 40+ miles) but Puerto Rico is a much larger island than St. Croix with more of everything to offer. Between the two of them, they are the lifelines to the islands squashed by Irma.

After Irma, I thought, “Wow. St. Croix has fallen into a multi-year boon. Everything (including tourism) will be flowing through St. Croix.”

But, guess what? Maria could crush St. Croix and eastern Puerto Rico, leaving the Irma- and Maria-stricken islands far, far away from help now and in the years to come.

Maria is bad, bad news for everyone.

  10. @Crank Bait:

I did not intend to overlook the islands to the east of the Virgin Islands. Several of them will be screwed by Maria (and, of them, several will be screwed by Maria after having been screwed by Irma).

However, those islands include Dutch and French possessions and former colonies.
The Netherlands and France are already gearing up for long-term aid because of Irma. The other independent islands will benefit from some spillover.

The leeward islands tend to have a feel of neighborhood clusters. The U.S. and British Virgin Islands, along with Puerto Rico, is a neighborhood cluster. Farther to the east, (Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Martin, Saba, St. Barts, St. Kitts, etc.) is another neighborhood cluster.

The neighbors in the clusters will help one another. That’s how it works. Unfortunately, there is a lot of sea between islands.

Category 5 Hurricane Maria Hits Dominica
Dr. Jeff Masters · September 18, 2017, 9:41 PM EDT

Category 5 Hurricane Maria made a direct hit on the small Lesser Antilles island of Dominica (population 72,000) near 9 pm EDT Monday, becoming Dominica’s first Category 5 landfall on record. At the time of landfall, an Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft measured surface winds of 160 mph and a central pressure of 924 mb. Maria likely did catastrophic damage to Dominica.

Heavy rain squalls and rising winds were being observed late Monday afternoon at Melville Hall Airport on Dominica, which measured sustained winds at 31 mph, gusting to 48 mph, at 6 pm EDT Monday. That station then went off-line, as did Canefield Airport, an hour later. A personal weather station on the northwest end of the island stopped transmitting as of 9:50 pm EDT Monday, after measuring a pressure of 986 mb. Satellite loops and radar out of Martinique and Barbados clearly show Maria’s small, 9-mile diameter eye, surrounded by a daunting array of spiral bands with heavy thunderstorms, Maria’s hurricane-force winds were confined to a relatively narrow 40-mile diameter region around the hurricane’s small eye, but the tropical storm-force wind area was 230 miles in diameter…

  12. This has been a bad year for the Islands of the Caribbean. Lets hope the strength of Maria dissipates before it reaches the other Islands.
