Open Thread – Making America “Hate” Again – Trump, Cruz Aftermath

Never thought I’d see the Hate and Division I am seeing in our Nation lately. Many things are to blame, especially the two GOP candidates mentioned. But also a lot of the blame goes to the Media. Instead of doing their job of seeking truth, they are seeking ratings which bring them money in advertising dollars. Investigative reporting is almost non-existent! And whipping the racism and anger of the people will leave a big toll in our near future.

The infestation of hate speech, egoism and greed will be hard to erase. And much of that is evident in our Federal and State Governments. A lot funded by the very rich and big corporations pushing money at these politicians to push their own agenda. An agenda that is horrible for the people of this Nation.

This coming year your Vote will be very important, more than ever before. If you don’t Vote or Vote for the wrong people we all live with the consequences and I will warn you, You Won’t Like it!

@mirella: I think Bernie did a great job. I truly like and trust him to do more than any other candidate would do to help the people.
    ——————————–
Me, too. But I think about President Bernie trying to deal with both houses of Congress, not to mention the DNC. How would that play out?

The same is true of Hillary minus the DNC part. How would that play out?

Only rookies to U.S. political science believe that winning the presidency is The Big Win. Sure, Supreme Court appointments count for a lot. Everything else is up for grabs.

The Republicans scored big when the party usurped ALEC and focused on state/local government elections. If, magically, the Democrats lost the White House but won local elections across the fifty states, that would be The Big Win.

I watched bernie sanders and yes I agree he did good; during the commercial break I was watching bits and pieces of the BBC war and Peace and after Bernie I decided to just continue watching that show because I had no stomach for hillary; but now i regret it; maybe i will watch a rerun if available because i am curious to hear her comments about the bernie ad (Garfunkel) which i am assuming she was asked.

Farron Cousin is so right; this hillary and surrogates’ campaign is going to have long term effects on the democratic party no matter how it ends; the rift between the corporate and the more progressive base won’t heal, and it shouldn’t; the rotten core has been exposed and need to be cleansed; all these people that are jumping on hillary bandwagon – including media figures like krugman and brock – they are not our friends any more the way they are running their lurid campaign of lies that reneges on everything the party is supposed to be about

Auto-supplier Johnson Controls, currently based in Milwaukee, has sought and received a huge pile of tax breaks and subsidies. Between 1992 and 2009, Michigan gave it $149 million (while scrimping on Flint’s water and Detroit’s schools), and in 2008 it argued vociferously in favor of the $80 billion federal bailout of its major customers, GM and Chrysler. By 2010, with its business back on track, the company doubled the pay of its then CEO to more than $15 million.

But yesterday, Johnson Controls’ current CEO Alex Molinari (below) announced the corporation was renouncing its U.S. corporate citizenship and moving to Ireland (technically by selling itself to Ireland-based Tyco International), thereby lowering its tax bill by $150 million annually. Molinaroli himself will receive as much as $79.6 million for doing the deal — including the total value of his deferred compensation and pension plan ($20.5 million) as a lump payment, $20.1 million in stock options, and a $39 million termination fee. (Under U.S. tax rules, if a new position significantly reduces your day-to-day role at the company then it qualifies as a termination.)

Business apologists say the only way to stop these corporate desertions is to cut U.S. corporate taxes (which, of course, would mean higher taxes for the rest of us).

Wrong. Corporations and individuals deserting America should no longer be entitled to the privileges of American citizenship – including the right to make campaign contributions and lobby, or be represented and protected by the U.S. government. And U.S. tax laws should be rewritten so that CEOs like Molinari can’t cash out big when they make these deals.

The press and party elite finally are taking Bernie Sanders’ campaign seriously and debate has surged as to whether he could be a successful party candidate in the general election or an effective president.

At CommonDreams.org, Peter Bloom argues that the words radical and unelectable aren’t necessarily synonymous: “The mindset of the Democratic Party and much of the Liberal intelligentsia must be radically updated. It is more opportunistic than substantive and perhaps even worse largely ineffective. A potential Sanders’ victory represents a chance to infuse the Party with some desperately needed new thinking.” http://billmoyers.com/story/morning-reads-democrats-take-a-hard-look-at-sanders-vs-clinton/

  8. Bernie Sanders Places A Hold On President Obama’s Nominee To Run The FDA

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has announced that he is placing a hold on President Obama’s nominee to be FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf because of his close ties to Big Pharma and his lack of commitment to lowering prescription drug prices.

Sanders joined Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) in placing a hold on the controversial nomination.

In a statement, Sen. Sanders said:

I share Sen. Markey’s concerns that the FDA must change the way it approaches addiction. Too many Americans are dying from what has become an opioid epidemic. I also strongly believe that at a time when millions of Americans cannot afford to purchase the prescription drugs they require, we need a leader at the FDA who is prepared to stand up to the drug companies. We need someone who will work to substantially lower drug prices, implement rules to safely import brand-name drugs from Canada and hold companies accountable who defraud our government.

Dr. Califf’s extensive ties to the pharmaceutical industry give me no reason to believe that he would make the FDA work for ordinary Americans, rather than just the CEOs of pharmaceutical companies.

Stop The Nonsense: Single Payer Healthcare WILL Work – The Ring of Fire

The media is telling us that Bernie Sanders’ plan for a single payer healthcare option is unattainable, but the facts of the case say otherwise. These naysayers clearly have something to gain by downplaying a plan that most Americans support.

Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

Was a Defective Prescription Drug Responsible for Glenn Frey’s Death?

Fans of the 1970s rock band Eagles were stunned last week to learn of the death of guitarist Glenn Frey at the age of 67. Evidence is now emerging, indicating that the medications Frey was taking for his rheumatoid arthritis might have been a contributing factor to his demise.

According to his manager and personal friend, Irving Azoff, Frey had been battling rheumatoid arthritis for fifteen years. Frey died from complications related to ulcerative colitis, which Azoff says were side effects of the medications.

Frey’s physicians should have known as well. However, instead of taking him off the medications and trying to find alternative treatments, they removed part of his large intestine. Although they are much different diseases, both rheumatoid arthritis and colitis are inflammatory autoimmune disorders, meaning that the immune system is actually attacking the patient’s own body. Because of this, medications used to treat these conditions work to suppress the immune system. The most serious drawback to this approach is that it leaves the patient vulnerable to a number of serious, and even life-threatening infections.

The class of immuno-suppressive drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis is known as Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs, or DMARDs. These drugs are known to have serious side effects that include tuberculosis and cardiac arrest. One of them, adalimumab (marketed under the trade names Humira and Exemptia), has even been implicated in the development of cancer, nerve damage, severe dehydration and infections. [more]

[ I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I have taken that same drug, Humira. Its a shot you give yourself in the thigh. I stopped taking it because it was so expensive $1800 a month. I was also on Vioxx, an NSAID that was taken off the market and that gave me Atrial Fibrillation. The drug for that is a blood thinner and the new drugs are being sued because people have bled to death so I refused to take it. These new drugs are very dangerous. They may help one problem but they give you another even worse problem.]

    Right-wing alert:

Americans can amend the Constitution in two ways, according to Article V of the Constitution. The first is for Congress to propose an amendment with two-thirds majority in both chambers that must then be ratified by three-quarters of the states. This route has been used to pass all 27 amendments that exist today. The second requires two-thirds of states to call a convention for proposing amendments, but the Constitution is silent about who might attend such a convention and what it could or could not enact.

That’s a recipe for trouble – and, as you might expect, the trouble is coming from the Right and its billionaire patrons. Already, 27 states have active calls for a convention on a balanced budget amendment, which would force the federal government to pass budgets that don’t enlarge the national debt – thereby preventing the federal government from stimulating the economy during economic downturns. This means only 7 more states are needed in order to convene a constitutional convention.

It’s a real possibility: In just the first few weeks of this year’s state legislative sessions, at least 10 states have bills pending that call for a convention. Even some Republican presidential candidates are endorsing it. National right-wing corporate fronts such as ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) have been holding workshops and crafting model legislation to persuade state legislators to move on it.

Don’t be fooled by those who say such a convention would be an easy means for reversing “Citizens United” – or, at worst, for forging a compromise that accepts a balanced budget amendment in return for reversing “Citizens United.” It’s far more dangerous than this. Once a constitutional convention is called, the constitutional issues considered by it can’t be limited. This means every constitutional right and protection provided Americans could be subject to change. As Harvard Law professor and leading constitutional scholar Lawrence Tribe has said, such a convention would be “putting the whole Constitution up for grabs.”

    Consider yourself warned.

Hillary’s Latest Dirty Trick Outrages Even Kumbaya Progressive Thom Hartmann
    Jan 25, 2016 6:40pm CST by ConnectTheDotsUSA

By now most of you are familiar with Hillary’s latest dirty trick when, in the last debate, she accused Bernie of voting to deregulate the financial markets in 2000. WTF? Bernie supporters were all understandably gobsmacked by her latest attempt to deflect attention from her Wall Street puppet strings.

Daily Kos: Hill People continue to push Clinton’s most dishonest moment from last debate — Why?

Truth-out: The Most Disingenuous Attack on Bernie Yet
Truthdig: Hillary Blames Bernie for an Old Clintonite Hustle

What Hillary conveniently left out is that her husband, President Bill Clinton, along with her current campaign’s chief financial officer, Gary Gensler, drafted and pushed to insert the Commodities Futures Modernization Act (CFMA) into an 11,000 page must-pass annual budget appropriation at the final hour. Then her husband enthusiastically signed it into law.

Only the most naive or deceitful would suggest that voting for a huge spending bill to keep the government from shutting down means you are voting for every single thing in the legislation. After Bernie (and other Democrats) discovered the manipulation, he championed the fight against the CFMA, including later getting the “Enron Loophole” removed and trying (unsuccessfully) to block Goldman Sachs’ Gary Gensler from securing an Obama appointment to chair the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

What does Hillary do instead? She hires the $60-million Gary Gensler to advise her campaign and help her with debate prep. No doubt he and his ilk are on her short list for Treasury Secretary.

Equation shows that large-scale conspiracies would quickly reveal themselves

…Using the equation, Dr Grimes calculated that hoax moon landings would have been revealed in 3 years 8 months, a climate change fraud in 3 years 9 months, a vaccination conspiracy in 3 years 2 months, and a suppressed Cancer cure in 3 years 3 months. In simple terms, any one of the four conspiracies would have been exposed long before now.

He then looked at the maximum number of people who could take part in an intrigue in order to maintain it. For a plot to last five years, the maximum was 2521 people. To keep a scheme operating undetected for more than a decade, fewer than 1000 people can be involved. A century-long deception should ideally include fewer than 125 collaborators. Even a straightforward cover-up of a single event, requiring no more complex machinations than everyone keeping their mouth shut, is likely to be blown if more than 650 people are accomplices.

Dr Grimes said: ‘Not everyone who believes in a conspiracy is unreasonable or unthinking. I hope that by showing how eye-wateringly unlikely some alleged conspiracies are, some people will reconsider their anti-science beliefs.

‘This will of course not convince everyone; there’s ample evidence that belief in conspiracy is often ideological rather than rational, and that conspiracy theories thrive in an echo chamber. This makes challenging the more odious narratives much more difficult. If we are to address the multitudinous difficulties facing us as a species, from climate change to geo-politics, then we need to embrace reality over ideologically motivated fictions. To this end, we need to better understand how and why some ideas are entrenched and persistent among certain groups despite the evidence, and how we might counteract this.’

Stephen Colbert Gets Donald Rumsfeld To Admit The Iraq War Was All A Lie (VIDEO)

Donald Rumsfeld is in full damage control mode after a declassified memo from 2002 making the rounds revealed that he lied about Iraq’s “WMDs.” Like anyone desperate to sway public opinion and keep himself out of jail, Rumsfeld is giving interviews to tell “his side.” Why he decided to go The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is unclear. Colbert is a screaming liberal, very smart and very well-informed. Perhaps Rumsfeld thought he could outmaneuver the comedian? Maybe he thought Colbert would go easy on him? Maybe Rumsfeld is suffering from dementia?

Needless to say, the interview did not go well for Rumsfeld:

The talk show host said this showed Bush administration officials believed there were weapons of mass destruction — but they had no hard evidence of their existence.

“I believe that sincerely — I don’t think anybody made up the belief that there were weapons of mass destruction,” Colbert said, as Rumsfeld insisted those beliefs were sincere. “That is cynicism beyond what I would ever want to think of my government.”

“I believe that everybody believed that they were there, but there was no hard proof that they were there,” he continued. “And yet it was presented to the American people as if there was. So there was an unknown known for the American people. It was known that there was not hard evidence, but we were presented a partial picture — and that’s the unknown known that we were denied. Do you think that was the right thing to do?”

  13. Not Just Flint: Elevated Lead and Copper Levels Found in Ohio Town

Amid all of the terrifying facts coming out from the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, some Americans are beginning to wonder if their own town’s water supply is safe to drink. In a small town in Ohio, residents were warned that pregnant women and children should not be drinking the water after it was found to have elevated levels of copper and lead.

The levels of lead and copper in Sebring are above what the EPA says is acceptable. Officials say that smaller distribution lines and older homes which use lead pipes are to blame for the elevated levels. Out of the 20 homes tested, 7 registered the higher-than-acceptable levels.

It appears that the EPA discovered these levels a bit too late- the high metal content had been flowing into homes and human bodies for months with some officials doing nothing. One employee for the Sebring village water treatment plant, James Bates, has been forbidden to work by the EPA and placed on administrative leave.

Ohio EPA director Craig Butler is calling for criminal investigations. Butler also says that the EPA should have made announcements about the water quality much sooner. [more]

by Aviva Shen Jan 26, 2016 9:19 pm

Four members of the militia occupying the Malheur National Refuge, including Ammon Bundy, were taken into custody Tuesday night following a shooting nearby, according to local news reports.

The Harney County District Hospital in Burns, Oregon is on lockdown, and a section of the highway is also closed. It is unclear if Bundy was involved in the shooting or not, but some sources have told local outlets that an altercation occurred when the militia was on its way to a meeting in John Day, a neighboring town.

Bundy and his militia have been occupying the federal property since the beginning of January, and law enforcement has been hesitant to remove them. But conflicts with local residents have escalated recently; members of the occupation have torn down their fences and reportedly vandalized other property in the town. Locals have grown angrier at the lack of action to remove the militia.

Two other militia members were arrested last week when they stole federal vehicles to drive to Safeway. Meanwhile, the militia has been trying to convene their own justice system to attempt to arrest local officials. [end]

Up to eight of Bundy’s followers were detained, the source said.

Shots were fired after authorities made the stop, according to the source. It’s not clear who fired first.

The group of protesters has occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge since January 2 to protest federal land policies.

Bundy, son of controversial Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, and others started out protesting the sentencing of Dwight Hammond and his son Steven, ranchers convicted of arson on federal lands in Oregon.
