Apologies to the large crowds who couldn’t fit indoors at tonight’s rally. We’re gonna have to get bigger venues!

Billy Graham’s son Franklin earned $880,000 last year from two charities. @theobserver

Six years ago, Franklin Graham decided to give up his pay as head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

“I feel that God has called me to this ministry and that calling was never based on compensation,” he wrote then in a memo to the BGEA staff.

But since 2011, at the urging of the Charlotte-based ministry’s board of directors, Graham has been receiving a salary again.

That’s in addition to the more than $620,000 he receives for his other full-time job, leading Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief agency based in Boone. His 2013 compensation from Samaritan’s Purse alone made him the highest-paid CEO of any international relief agency based in the U.S., according to data provided by GuideStar, the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations.

Graham’s total compensation last year from the two charities was more than $880,000, including $258,667 from BGEA.

Among pledges for #WikiLeaks’ #TTIP bounty: Varoufakis, Westwood, Greenwald, Pilger, Ellsberg, Morozov and #Assange

WikiLeaks goes after hyper-secret Euro-American trade pact

Today, Tuesday 11th August, 9:15 BST, WikiLeaks has launched a campaign to crowd-source a €100,000 reward for Europe’s most wanted secret: the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

Starting pledges have already been made by a number of high profile activists and luminaries from Europe and the United States, including former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, esteemed UK fashion designer and environmental campaigner Dame Vivenne Westwood, US journalist Glenn Greenwald, veteran Australian film-maker and investigative journalist John Pilger, Belarusian philosopher and theorist Evgeny Morozov, Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg and WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange.

Since it began to face opposition from BRICS countries at the World Trade Organisation, US policy has been to push through a triad of international “trade agreements” outside of the WTO framework, aimed at radically restructuring the economies of negotiating countries, and cutting out the rising economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS).

The three treaties, the “Three Big T’s”, aim to create a new international legal regime that will allow transnational corporations to bypass domestic courts, evade environmental protections, police the internet on behalf of the content industry, limit the availability of affordable generic medicines, and drastically curtail each country’s legislative sovereignty.

Two of these super-secret trade deals have already been published in large part by WikiLeaks – the Transpacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) – defeating unprecedented efforts by negotiating governments to keep them under wraps. [more]

  5. @toniD:

I am reading where the “Oathkeepers” are saying they have been “hired” by “reporters” and local business community to “protect their persons and property”… in short, they are fascist mercenaries… the police are treating them as “private security” and turning a blind eye… the reality is they are just racist gun-nutty assholes looking for a fight, any fight, where they can display their “patriotism” by being insurrectionist… sooner or later the majority of the peaceful people in Ferguson are going to start to see this as an invasion by an occupying force and it will get ugly… next step is National Guard…

The Bernie Sanders Surge Appears To Be Over

…None of this is to say that Sanders won’t rise further or even win one or both of these states. It’s just that, for now, the Sanders surge has slowed (or stopped), and gaining more support will be harder for him than it has been. To win in Iowa or New Hampshire, Sanders will have to appeal to voters less predisposed to him than his current supporters.
