Open Thread for Republican Convention 2016 in Cleveland

The 2016 Republican National Convention starts this Monday, July 18, 2016 Through July 21, 2016.

From their site: 2016 Republican National Convention announces Freedom Plaza

Cleveland, OH – Centered between Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field is Freedom Plaza, an open air gathering space unique to the 2016 Republican National Convention. Freedom Plaza will be home to a “Salute to America”; the cuisine and music of the South, East, West, and Midwest will be featured each day of the Convention. All Convention attendees are welcome to grab a drink, indulge in local fare, listen to some great music, and mix and mingle in the hours before and after each Convention session.

It will be a very interesting convention this year because no one knows what to expect. But the Cleveland Police are gearing up for the worst….

Cleveland Police Are Gearing Up for Mayhem at the GOP Convention

With the Republican National Convention imminent, the Cleveland Police Department is finalizing its security plan for what is expected to be a volatile few days. The city announced last Friday that it was updating its plan following last week’s mass shooting of police officers in Dallas, and though it shared scant detail, the Cleveland PD is set to be outfitted with plenty of heavy gear.

The RNC is designated as a National Special Security Event by the US Department of Homeland Security, which entitled Cleveland to a $50 million federal grant toward its security plan. According to bids the city has posted to its website and reports from local news outlets, so far Cleveland has spent the money on:

2,000 sets of riot gear
2,000 steel batons
325 sets of tactical armor
300 patrol bicycles, with accompanying riot gear
25 rifle scopes
10,000 flexible handcuffs

Other supplies include bulletproof helmets, pepper spray, two-point slings (used to carry rifles) and inmate mattresses. The Cleveland PD also asked the Chicago Police Department to loan it three bearcats, and Taser International is loaning the department 300 body cameras that can be attached to riot suits. The city also put out a bid for tear gas, according to the Washington Post, and it recently upped its protest insurance coverage from $9.5 million to $50 million. [more]

Here’s a fresh page for you to fill with comments about what is happening at the convention.

UPDATE:

Charlie Pierce says: Welcome to the 2016 Republican convention: a four-day celebration of the ritual suicide of American democracy.

Newly Presidential Donald Trump Addresses JFK Conspiracy Theories

    Again.

CLEVELAND, OHIO—In the interest of good government, I have a suggestion for Republican vice-presidential candidate Mike Pence. Mike, here’s the thing. When you are on television standing behind your running mate and he starts babbling and fuming and going publicly bananas, as hard as it may be, it’s probably best if you try to avoid looking at your running mate as though he were a two-headed talking ape. This is going to happen quite a few times between now and November.

I suppose it’s cold comfort to know that he still can’t control himself, that even while his abbatoir of an acceptance speech was being treated as something more than unusually grammatical gibberish. I suppose it’s cold comfort to know that the Republican presidential nominee remains desperately in need of adult supervision.

He, Trump stepped up to a microphone on Friday morning and launched into another episode. He danced on the body of Ted Cruz, again, saying he didn’t want the Tailgunner’s endorsement. He once again bragged about his poll numbers and his wonderful brilliant children. (Do any of them other than Barron have mothers?) He once again explained about how his presidency will function overseas largely as a protection racket. (“We’ll take care of them if they pay us.”) This, dear friends, was the speech he desperately wanted to give Thursday night. [more]

Even if he’s defeated in November, Trump will have legitimized the politics of hate in America — making it acceptable to seek power by stoking racial, ethnic, or religious resentment. Trump has already lifted up several of our society’s rocks, letting loose all manner of vicious vermin hiding beneath them (such as David Duke, former KKK Wizard).

WikiLeaks releases thousands of documents about Clinton and internal deliberations

As Hillary Clinton prepared to announce her 2016 running mate, a trove of nearly 20,000 emails were released by WikiLeaks on Friday, providing an embarrassing inside look at Democratic Party operations on the eve of the Democrats’ national convention.

The emails from the Democratic National Committee include discussions of Clinton’s chief rival for the presidential nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.); details of perks provided to party donors attending the convention; and email exchanges between party officials, journalists and others.

The emails were released with an announcement by WikiLeaks on Twitter that linked readers to a WikiLeaks page inviting visitors to “Search the DNC email database.” A search box sits underneath a one-paragraph introduction:

“Today, Friday 22 July 2016 at 10:30am EDT, WikiLeaks releases 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from the top of the US Democratic National Committee — part one of our new Hillary Leaks series,” the introduction says. “The leaks come from the accounts of seven key figures in the DNC,” including Communications Director Luis Miranda (10770 emails), National Finance Director Jordon Kaplan (3797 emails), Finance Chief of Staff Scott Comer and others. The newly released emails cover the period from January 2015 through May 25, 2016.

Friday’s digital document dump follows a report last month by The Washington Post that Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee, gaining access to an entire database of opposition research. DNC and Clinton campaign did not respond to a request for comment Friday as reporters and campaign staff began to assess the situation.

One email written May 5 to DNC communications director Luis Miranda from another party official suggests looking at Bernie Sanders’ faith.

  7. How Hillary Turned Into a Neocon
    by Diana Johnstone
    July 22, 2016

Your first two books, Fool’s Crusade and the Politics of Euromissiles focus on the projection of unilateral American power abroad. Queen of Chaos continues along these lines. How would you see Hillary Clinton differs from Donald Trump in her views of American military prowess?

Hillary Clinton adheres to the notion that American military power is capable of achieving just about whatever U.S. leaders want it to do. All that is needed to get our way is “resolve”. Thus she and her foreign policy clique (represented by the 51 “dissident” State Department employees who recently criticized Obama’s caution, neocon Victoria Nuland and Clinton’s probable choice as Secretary of “Defense”, Michele Flournoy) seem confident that U.S. air strikes could counter Russian influence in Syria. Such overconfidence leads to taking grave risks without weighing the possible outcomes.

So far, Trump’s foreign policy statements are somewhat ambiguous. In competition with Hillary for support from the influential pro-Israel lobby, Trump’s aggressive condemnation of the Iran nuclear deal competes with Clinton’s bellicose threats to “obliterate” Iran. However, by promising to “make America great again”, Trump implies that the U.S. is not so all-powerful. Considering that he set out to win the nomination from the Republican Party, which is not exactly a peace movement, Trump may have been using aggressive rhetoric precisely in order to sell a policy of withdrawal from worldwide battlefields. Blaming free rider allies sets a nationalist tone to such withdrawal. His focus on wiping out Islamic terrorism is consistent with normalizing relations with Russia and reversal of Hillary Clinton’s “regime change” policy. Sounding “crazy” could be a symptom of realism.

Moody’s election prediction model, which has accurately predicted every election since it was created in 1980, is forecasting a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton in November.

Speechwriter Comes Clean: Melania Trump Plagiarized Speech Because She Admires Michelle Obama

The controversy over Melania Trump’s plagiarized speech at the Republican National Convention stubbornly refuses to go away. Following the initial revelation that several passages were blatantly lifted from a 2008 speech by Michelle Obama, Donald Trump’s defenders mobilized to deny reality and try to convince America that they could not believe their own eyes and ears.

The Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort, dismissed it as being a coincidental collection of commonly used words. That was after he baselessly blamed it all on Hillary Clinton. Chris Christie excused it because only part of it was plagiarized. Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson complained that Michelle Obama thinks she “invented the English language.” RNC Spokesman Sean Spicer turned it back on Michelle Obama saying that she plagiarized My Little Pony. Trump Communications Director Jason Miller reduced it to “included fragments that reflected her own thinking.” The Trump people simultaneously said that Melania wrote the speech herself (which she told NBC’s Matt Laurer), but that any problems were the fault of her team of writers.

Today the speechwriter came forward with a totally new account of what happened. She released a letter on Trump Organization stationary (image below) taking the fall for the whole affair:

“My name is Meredith McIver and I’m an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization. I am also a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family.”

“In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.”

Quite the editorial from the Washington Post, which starts with this:

“Donald J. Trump, until now a Republican problem, this week became a challenge the nation must confront and overcome. The real estate tycoon is uniquely unqualified to serve as president, in experience and temperament. He is mounting a campaign of snarl and sneer, not substance. To the extent he has views, they are wrong in their diagnosis of America’s problems and dangerous in their proposed solutions. Mr. Trump’s politics of denigration and division could strain the bonds that have held a diverse nation together. His contempt for constitutional norms might reveal the nation’s two-century-old experiment in checks and balances to be more fragile than we knew.

“Any one of these characteristics would be disqualifying; together, they make Mr. Trump a peril. We recognize that this is not the usual moment to make such a statement. In an ordinary election year, we would acknowledge the Republican nominee, move on to the Democratic convention and spend the following months, like other voters, evaluating the candidates’ performance in debates, on the stump and in position papers. This year we will follow the campaign as always, offering honest views on all the candidates. But we cannot salute the Republican nominee or pretend that we might endorse him this fall. A Trump presidency would be dangerous for the nation and the world.”

The pulpit is a political soapbox and it has been for a very long time. Political sermonizing has increased and has become more brazen in recent years. I don’t doubt that it would worsen if legislation against it were repealed.

However, when was the last time you read about a church or a minister who had been charged for violating federal tax law by politicking from the pulpit? The IRS is toothless without support from the judiciary. In 2013, the IRS was attacked for targeting Conservative groups that were seeking tax-exempt status. The FBI and Eric Holder were reviled in that debacle, too.

Never mind that the IRS is woefully understaffed and is unable to investigate more than a few suspects—from Wall Street to Main Street—and will always be accused of “targeting” the schmuck under the spotlight.

The tax-exempt violations, from churches to other organizations required to exist for “social welfare,” are seldom pursued. The law is flaccid.

Updated by Matthew Yglesias on July 22, 2016

Hillary Clinton’s running mate will be Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, who is exactly the person it seemed she would choose a month ago (or a year ago or, really, four years ago). It’s all part of the thrilling trend of the Democratic race unfolding in a very predictable way, even amidst all the insanity of 2016.

Unlike Donald Trump, who had major work to do in terms of unifying the Republican Party and has dozens of obvious political weaknesses to shore up, the political stakes for Clinton’s pick were relatively low. She has the Democratic establishment all locked up and has for years. And while she certainly has her weaknesses as a candidate, they’re not really amenable to being fixed through a vice presidential selection.

But the substantive stakes in the veepstakes are always high, for two simple reasons: modern vice presidents generally play a substantive role in presidential administrations, and it’s not all that rare for the vice president to end up becoming the president some day.

So while some find both Kaine and the Kaine pick boring, I see a consequential moment in American history that deserves to be treated seriously.

And so, without further ado, here’s who won and who lost in Hillary’s VP pick: [more]

The problem is that after the election the people are either too demoralized or too lazy to do the work and build the movement from the ground up finding the right people to run for office and backing them.

Leaked DNC Emails Confirm Democrats Rigged Primary, Reveal Extensive Media Collusion https://t.co/hwpJnt5Mud

There are three key findings to emerge from yesterday’s dump of leaked DNC emails released by Wikileaks:

There had been a plot designed to smear Bernie Sanders and to hand the Democratic nomination to Hillary on a silver platter
There has been repeated collusion between the DNC and the media
There has been questionable fundraising for both Hillary Clinton and the DNC

First, a quick recap for those who missed the original report, yesterday Wikileaks released over 19,000 emails and more than 8,000 attachments from the Democratic National Committee. This is what the whistleblower organization reported:

WikiLeaks releases 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from the top of the US Democratic National Committee — part one of our new Hillary Leaks series. The leaks come from the accounts of seven key figures in the DNC: Communications Director Luis Miranda (10770 emails), National Finance Director Jordon Kaplan (3797 emails), Finance Chief of Staff Scott Comer (3095 emails), Finanace Director of Data & Strategic Initiatives Daniel Parrish (1472 emails), Finance Director Allen Zachary (1611 emails), Senior Advisor Andrew Wright (938 emails) and Northern California Finance Director Robert (Erik) Stowe (751 emails). The emails cover the period from January last year until 25 May this year.d

Subsequently, the Romanian hacker known as Guccifer 2.0 (who has denied he works with the Russian government), who has already released hundreds of hacked DNC emails previously, told The Hill he leaked the documents to Wikileaks. [more]

Instead of Donald Trump honoring the painting contract he signed and paying this local Miami business the remaining $34,863 balance he owed them, his company just took it upon itself to say that they had been “paid enough”.

The company slapped a lien on his Doral resort and that woke the old Trumpster up. Judge awards attorney’s fees totaling nearly $300,000. Trump still hasn’t paid the local painting business the remaining balance.

When the director of communications wanted to complain to CNN about a segment the network aired in which Bernie said he would oust the chairwoman if he were elected, Wasserman Schultz emails back, “he isn’t going to be president.” In reference to a Washington Post piece that said Bernie was seeking a more balanced approach to Israel and Palestine, she emails “the Israel stuff is disturbing,” prompting another official to email back that Hillary’s campaign had pushed the story. In other emails Wasserman Schultz refers to Bernie’s campaign manager as a “damn liar,” and “an ASS.”

Another email shows one DNC official trying to get reporters to write that Bernie’s campaign is “a mess.” In another, the DNC’s chief financial officer seeks ways to bring attention to Bernie’s religious beliefs, “for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps.” Other emails show officials of the DNC using “us” language when referring to Hillary supporters and “them” language in reference to Bernie’s.

    Fire her now. https://wikileaks.org/dnc-emails/

1: If you want a more progressive Democratic party, start electing progressives at the local level, take over state parties and key …

2: stakeholder interest groups. This is what really works. It’s how Republicans moved their party to the right. It’s hard and it takes …

3: a long time. If u want to be a preening douchebag, support a 3rd party bid at the presidential level. Its not principle, just acting out.

@kechallis @joshtpm Voting isn’t always about being excited. Sometimes it’s simply about stopping evil. And that’s more than enough.

Josh Marshal and others like him are full of shit… They let themselves off the hook way to often and far too easily… A vote for Hillary is not a heroic selfless “vote against Trump”… It’s a vote for Hillary and everything she stands for… People spewing that tired bullshit need to at least accept that reality… Especially the one’s that have been Bernie Bashing since he pissed all over her cakewalk coronation… like Josh Marshall…. “douchebag” indeed….

    Dear Donald Trump,
If the US is the dangerous, violent, jobless hellhole you describe, why are you so worried about Mexicans wanting to come here?
    Sincerely,

A Third Woman Alleges She Was Sexually Assaulted By Donald Trump
Read her claims before you dismiss her.

On Wednesday, in the midst of the Republican National Convention, new allegations emerged of sexual assault committed by Donald Trump. This is the third woman who has accused the GOP presidential nominee of sexual assault.

The latest allegations of unwanted sexual contact by Trump come from Jill Harth, a makeup artist and business associate of the billionaire in the early 1990s. According to Harth, Trump sexually harassed her on numerous occasions, including cornering her in his daughter Ivanka’s bedroom and attempting to have sex with her. In 1997, Harth filed a lawsuit detailing Trump’s alleged repeated efforts to force her to have sex with him, as well as a number of other outrageous and inappropriate behaviors. [more]

  36. Sorry it took so long to answer. My computer was throwing out script errors and then froze on me. Tired of the script errors and not being able to hear some videos while others blast.

What’s going on with the internet and browsers lately??
