A new thread to fill with comments for the buildup to the Elections. The strangest election of my lifetime.

This cartoon kinda says it all about what we are dealing with this election.

Tulsi Gabbard: I don’t fear Clintons

March 9, 2016, 9:50 PM|Bernie Sanders supporter, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), who resigned her position as vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee to endorse the Vermont senator, tells CBS News that while people warned her not to defy the Clintons, she doesn’t fear potential retaliation. Gabbard also discussed the state of the primary fight and stressed that Sanders still has a path to the Democratic nomination despite trailing Hillary Clinton in delegates. Gabbard joined CBS News’ Demarco Morgan to discuss the 2016 Democratic race.

Why climate change is such a big issue in Florida

Update: The subject of climate change came up again during Thursday night’s Republican debate, which was also held in Miami. We are re-upping the below post from earlier in the day.

At the moment that I write this, the measured water levels at Virginia Key, Fla., are about eight inches above predicted levels. In January, levels were regularly a foot or more above predicted levels.

At its root, the flooding is a function of climate change. Warmer temperatures caused by the greenhouse effect cause glaciers to melt, increasing the amount of water in the ocean. Those warmer temperatures also cause the water in the ocean itself to expand, the same way that the surface level of water heated on a stove will rise in a saucepan. Sea levels have risen several inches near Miami since 1960, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

At the debate, The Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty, serving as a moderator, noted that two dozen Florida mayors had requested that candidates address the subject in a debate. They wrote an open letter, asking for candidates to answer three questions: What investments will you make to protect our coastal assets and economy from the growing impacts of sea level rise and climate change?, What are specific policies you would put in place to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? and What policies would you put in place to ensure that America delivers on its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

Tumulty’s question was more direct, posed to Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) first. Since Republicans refuse to act on climate change — a function of skepticism in their base and among their allies — how can climate change be addressed?

Sanders suggested that Republicans were afraid to address the subject because they were worried about losing campaign funding. Later, he called for a “tax on carbon” and for heavy investments in energy efficiency and sustainable energy. He also called for an end to fracking. [more]

More Corruption At MSNBC: Hardball Host’s Guests Donate Big To Wife’s Campaign

News organization The Intercept has looked into Chris Matthew’s MSNBC show “Hardball” and discovered that 48 frequent guests on the show have given money to his wife’s congressional campaign. In all, the guests have contributed nearly $80,000 dollars.

Kathleen Matthews announced her run for Congress in Maryland’s 8th district in June of 2015, and it is between now and then that these many guests have appeared on the show shortly before or after giving money to Matthews’s campaign.

Chris Matthews had previously assured his audience on MSNBC that he would keep his coverage of his wife “transparent and fair.” And yet, he is clearly doing favors and asking for favors from those who come onto his show. Is he trading television appearances for donations? Or maybe he is bringing on fans of his wife so that they can lead the conversation in her direction?

Either way, its hardly surprising given the tone change at MSNBC witnessed in recent years. Matthews is the kind of journalist who doesn’t try very hard to hide his biases. Which is fine, I suppose, except when he claims that he isn’t biased at all. [more]

Republican debate –> No anatomy jokes here. The candidates focused on “issues” instead of personal attacks at last night’s debate in Miami. But, Jeb Lund at The Guardian quipped, “Just because it’s quieter doesn’t make it any smarter.”

Ezra Klein at Vox: “Was this debate substantive? Sure, in the sense that it focused on weighty policy topics like Social Security and trade and the assembled candidates mostly used their inside voices. But the things the candidates actually said were, by turns, wrong, misleading, misinformed, confused, or ridiculous. This substantive debate mostly showed how weak a grasp on the issues the candidates actually have.” http://billmoyers.com/story/morning-reads-gop-candidates-dive-into-the-issues-come-up-empty-handed/

Yuch, Trump and Cruz are in Chicago tonight. Trump has a rally at UIC Pavillion and there are many, many protesters outside and many Police also.
Bernie is also in Illinois in a Chicago Suburb called Summit. Local News hasn’t reported on that yet. I’ll report if I hear anything.

There are protesters outside the Palmer House in Chicago for the Ted Cruz Fund Raiser. He goes to Rolling Meadows after for another $1,000 Fund Raiser. The protesters outside of the Palmer House also have signs against Il Gov. Bruce Rauner. They do not like him either. It’s a young crowd.

Bernie Sanders crowd is already building in Summit and there will not be enough room for all of the crowd. He’ll be talking at 8 PM CT. Not as many Police at Bernie’s Venue.

  17. just saw a local news alert that drumpf will be in westchester ohio, which is boehner territory. its the home of voice of america park, the former site of the voice of america radio towers. when bush and mccain were running, they brought something like 50 buses in to form a closed off coral with entrance to the speaking area by ticket only.

sadly, i live in an area where there are more people that see drumpf as a hero rather than as evil.
