In Rebuke of Tennessee Governor, Koch Group Shows Its Power http://nbcnews.to/1FdYfmc via @NBCNews

    [snip]

NASHVILLE-In December, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, a Republican, got the deal he wanted from the Obama administration: Tennessee would accept more than $1 billion in federal funding to expand Medicaid, as allowed for in the Affordable Care Act, but Obama aides would allow Haslam to essentially write staunchly conservative ideas into the program’s rules for the state. He dubbed the reformed Medicaid program “Insure Tennessee.”

But the state’s chapter of Americans for Prosperity, the national conservative group whose foundation is chaired by controversial billionaire David Koch, argued Haslam was just trying to trick conservatives into implementing Obamacare in their state by giving it a new name. AFP campaigned aggressively Haslam’s plans for the next six weeks, even running radio ads blasting GOP state legislators who said they might vote for it.

On Wednesday, Haslam’s bill died in a committee of the Tennessee state senate. The vote was one of the clearest illustrations of the increasing power of AFP and other conservative groups funded in part by the Koch brothers. [more]

WSJ raises standing questions re 3 King plaintiffs: http://www.wsj.com/articles/health-law-challengers-standing-in-supreme-court-case-is-questioned-1423264458 … And three are on cusp of Medicare: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2015/02/06/morning-plum-meet-the-man-who-could-help-cripple-obamacare/

    [snip]

Politico has an amazing profile of Gregory King, the Virginia man who is the lead plaintiff in the King v. Burwell lawsuit, which could gut Obamacare subsidies for millions of people across the country. Let’s just quote from it:

The man who could cripple Obamacare isn’t shy about telling the world that he thinks the president is an “idiot,” posting altered images of the First Lady in Middle Eastern clothing and expressing his hatred for the “Democraps” who enacted the health care law.

David M. King, 64, is the lead plaintiff on the Supreme Court case that challenges the government’s right to grant tax subsidies to millions of Americans in certain states to make health insurance more affordable. When the case is argued on March 4, King — friendly, with graying hair and a mustache — will become the public face of King v. Burwell, the most significant threat to the Affordable Care Act since the 2012 Supreme Court case that put the law’s individual mandate on the line.

[The kicker, from the WSJ, is that King is a Viet Nam Vet and is covered under the VA, free of charge, but with what he is doing, he will take away help to pay for insurance from other people.]

‘Free trade’ isn’t what Trans-Pacific Partnership would deliver http://fw.to/MO6TrET

[The TPP has been cloaked in secrecy but this article gives a good idea what might be in it and why it’s bad for our country and the world.]

    [snip]

In principle, almost everyone’s in favor of free trade. It promotes international harmony, raises wages, helps economies grow. It’s an article of historical faith that the enactment of harsh protective U.S. tariffs in 1930 contributed to the Great Depression. And who wants that?

But “free trade” has little to do with the trade deal that President Obama hopes will be a high-water mark for his administration’s foreign policy: the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks, which now involve the U.S. and 11 Pacific Rim countries — Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

The pact — which has been under negotiation virtually since the turn of the century — is in trouble on Capitol Hill, where its enemies include conservatives and liberals. The overall problem may be that the TPP, as it’s known in shorthand, has become a symbol of everything that’s wrong with free trade agreements today. [more]
